One of the 7 gardens in the Chiran Samurai Residence complex, the Saigo Keichiro garden, combines several types of clipped plants, known in Japanese as karikomi.

The karikomi in the front are made by trimmed azaleas, while the one in the back, made of tall bushes, was designed to create an image that simulates a far away mountain, a technique called yamakarikomi, inspired by the shakkei (borrowed scenery) technique.

Nagasaki Sofuku-ji Sanmon gate

An old legend says that Ryūjin, the dragon kami of the sea, lives inside an underwater palace made of red coral. An entire architectural style, called Ryugu-zukuri, was developed inspired by this myth. An example of this style is the construction in today’s photo, the Sanmon gate of the Sofuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki.

Chiran Samurai Residence complex

Erected during the Edo period nearby the Chiran castle, the samurai district in Chiran had about 500 samurai residences. The streets were made with many right-angle turns and the homes were protected by walls made of stone and decorated with carefully trimmed bushes (which were also impossible to escalate).

Practically, the entire samurai district was conceived as an easily to defend fortress.

In Japan, the azaleas (tsutsuji) were cultivated since ancient times, and you they can be seen everywhere, from the high-class gardens to the side of the road. They are resistant to pollution, high-temperatures and dry weather.

The popularity of azaleas grew during the Edo period, when a large variety of flowers was developed, like the Purple Azaleas in today’s photo.
