These two constructions from different eras, the medieval Kokura castle, and the futuristic RiverWalk Kitakyushu mall are connected with design elements based on symbols of the Japanese culture.

The white section of the mall’s building was designed to have the same shade as the white of the plaster walls used in the traditional architecture, while the black section was inspired by the black of the kawara roof tiles.

The other two colors used for the RiverWalk buildings were selected to represent the red of the Japanese lacquer and the yellow of the rice fields.

Reflections at Rainbow Bridge

Seen from Odaiba on a freezing night, the Rainbow Bridge, the distant Tokyo Tower and the lights of the city are reflecting on the slightly rippled water. For some reason, I never get enough of this landscape. Simply beautiful…

Tokyo Yokocho (near Mita Station)

Mostly empty during daytime, the yokocho alleyways lined by izakaya and bars are coming to life by nighttime, when they lit up their large chōchin paper lanterns.

The happy atmosphere, filled with laughter and appetizing smells of yakitori, are making these alleyways irresistible places, even if you’re just a passerby…

Simply beautiful Japanese scenes, Clouds around Mount...

Among the many photos of Mount Fuji I took from the Shinkansen, I especially love this one, taken in summer time, when the cone can be seen without its famous snow cover, but it is surrounded by fluffy clouds. Simply beautiful…

Nature contemplation, Sakurajima

The most beautiful landscapes in Kagoshima are related to Sakurajima, the active volcano towering nearby the city. Among all these views my favorite is the one in today’s photo, taken inside the Sengan-en garden, a place where the greenery, the water and the rocky mountain are creating a dreamy landscape.

The Mount Fuji of the Suizenji garden

A gardening technique used especially in the stroll gardens built by the feudal lords of the Edo period is “shrunken scenery” (shukukei). This technique enhaces the garden with miniature imitations of famous scenic spots, like this Mount Fuji at the Suizenji garden in Kumamoto.
